The Princess And The Frog

Sunday was [info]scruffyrebel's birthday, and we were going to see the new Disney animated feature, The Princess And The Frog. The movie, which will be released in theatres this Friday, was being shown in a series of special screenings on the lot of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank.

She wanted to dress up for the screening, so for her birthday I made her this dress:

I made the dress out of silk charmeuse. She helped.
The Wikipedia entry on Charmeuse says "It is one of the more challenging fabrics to sew, and not recommended for beginners. The fabric is extremely slippery and difficult to control through the presser foot of a sewing machine. Seams to have a tendency to pucker and pull.... Charmeuse also tends to leave holes and marks where the fabric was pinned, making the manipulation of pattern pieces more challenging."

tl;dr = Silk charmeuse is a huge pain in the ass to work with.

She can sit down in the dress.
(That dark lump by her head is not a weird hair issue. It's actually a vicious, evil kitty.)

The dress was designed to be a modern, party dress version of Cinderella's first dress.

Not her well-known blue/silver dress, Cinderella's pink dress was the one the talking mice made for her. It was torn to shreds by her wicked stepsisters moments after she put it on, thus necessitating the magical creation of a new dress by her deus ex machina fairy godmother.
A few people at the screening actually recognized it, to my surprise.

A Catskills Tradition

The history of the Grandview (Alias) is much broader than just a tale of a single resort.
This plot of land represents the times of an entire region...
Within these walls you witness the rise, and fall, of the Borscht Belt.

The Borscht Belt is (was) a band of hotels, resorts, spas, and places of that nature,
that spread across the Catskills Mountain area of New York state.
At one time vacationing in the Catskills was a very popular thing to do.
It was at it's most popular from the late 1940's, up until the 70's.
A number of factors contributed to the eventual demise of the Borscht Belt,
not the least of which was affordable air-travel.
A family could now go to Florida for little more than the trip to up-state NY...
The entire Borscht Belt region now lays in ruin.
Hundreds of miles of mountain land, dotted with abandoned resorts.

Though the Grandview may stand for an era of American popular culture,
this is not to say that it was just a number in the list of Catskill resorts.
Of all the resorts that stretched the Borscht belt, the Grandview was the crown-jewel.
It was so popular during it's time that an airstrip was constructed on the grounds
so that vacationers could fly directly to the resort.
An airstrip that now has 20+ years of growth covering it...
Interestingly, the "Kellerman's Mountain Resort" from the 1980's film "Dirty Dancing"
was modeled after the Grandview.

The resort had very humble beginnings,
as a single house in the rural mountains of New York state.
A family of three decided to rent out the extra rooms of their home to vacationers from New York City.
The husband ran the facility, the wife cooked and cleaned, and the daughter was hostess.
In 1919 they sold the original house to purchase a larger one on 100 acres.
From that point on the resort steadily grew in size and popularity.
In 1952 it made history as the first ski slope in the world to use artificial snow.
By 1972 the resort had grown to 35 building on some 1,200 acres of land,
and was serving 150,000 guests annually.

Nothing lasts forever though...
By the late 1970's the younger market was no longer interested in vacationing in the Catskills.
Especially when they could take a jet anywhere in the country for nearly the same cost.
To regain Catskill popularity, a bill was put into motion to legalize gambling in the region.
In preparation for this influx of vacationers looking for an alternative to Atlantic City,
the Grandview went under a massive re-construction.
(I have included some of the re-design illustrations at the end of this entry,
along with more historical images of the place)
However, the bill was never passed and gambling remains illegal in the Catskills.
That was the last hit the resort could take.
Construction halted, and in 1986 the resort shut it's doors for good.

Present day is a strange way to perceive the Grandview.
It lies trapped, between what it once was, and what it was on it's way to becoming.

Has it begun?

I am curious if it is beginning? Will we hear that the situation is "under control" next?

I'm starting to think that one of the greatest things you can accomplish in a day is to find something that makes you go to bed with a smile on your face.

OH MY GOD I JUST WATCHED THE END OF IT AGAIN. It's like girl Gurren Lagann, but MORE CONFUSING, which is a plus for me (I think its pretty obvious at this point that I enjoy shows that make your head spin...).

Ok, ok, ok. I need to punch shit or run around, this show was so good. It was like watching a football game, and my team won...except I don't care much about sports and it was SO MUCH COOLER THAN THAT ANALOGY. RAHHHH

Well, that said, Gunbuster cosplay group? I don't know when, but I sure as hell want to get one together! Gunbuster 1 and 2 would be wholly appreciated. I want to cosplay Chico, but amelia is convinced that I wouldn't look so hot as her...too tall or too mature looking or something, which is understandable as I'm not 12 anymore.

Maybe I will, maybe I won't. Just thought I'd share this revoltingly cute design. If anyone has any thoughts on whether or not I should pursue it as a cosplay project, I'd love to hear!
Cosplay plans, updated! )

I'm trying to watch more anime as I just finished a series that I really happened to enjoy. If anyone has any suggestions, please do share!

About 5 miles north of Kramer Junction on the 395 outside of Boron, CA is an abandoned prison. FPC Boron ("Federal Prison Camp") shut down in around 2001 judging by the dates on most of the forms found around the facility. The facility itself does not appear to be a typical prison.. driving up to it, it looks mostly like an industrial complex. There are about 28 houses in a circle slightly south of the main facility--housing for the correctional staff. The inmate's quarters are two-story dorms with central air and heating and carpeted floors, huge windows. Each inmate gets a locker and there are bathrooms at the end of each hall. Not a bad place at all to serve out a sentence. The facility was minimum security and housed "white-collar" criminals.. sort of a slap-on-the-wrist detention center for tax fraud, stuff like that.

I've been to this site several times but decided to take a couple friends who'd never been. I took tons of pictures so I'll just post in parts.

You Do Not Exist

... despite living at our new address for several months, and having called the Post Office a long time ago to make sure they registered our address... people trying to "click and ship" through USPS.com still get our address as "not existing". Pizza places still can't find us and neither does google maps. Sometimes the postman just doesn't come at all. How many times do I have to call you, USPS? This will be my fourth time. Ridiculous. This is a run-of-the-mill thing, I shouldn't have to do this.

So have a tree and an angry-aimee for today's arts. I can't manage anything else because I spent the entire day thumbnailing 5 Futurama sequences and my brain is SPENT!

also makes me angry: myspace took over imeem. GOD, I HATE MYSPACE.

however,... this photoshoot of various actors reprising their iconic roles wearing normal clothes, is pretty awesome. The poses are really strong and there's something revealing about it. (thanks to macbeemer)

My latest obsession. Dengeki Daisy. You have nooo idea how obsessed I am of this manga... it took over my last obsession for shoujo manga. which is skip beat and kimi ni todoke (both i still keep up to date)

i think i re-read the series over and over every lunch period (or at least several times a week) for like a month ever since [info]treat introduced me to it ;____;

In my defense, I got [info]hakuku addicted to it at least! (and hopefully [info]unlock as well. I almost got her to read it when she was staying over at my place~~~ >.>;;; )

I'm looking into buying a wig to cosplay Kurosaki. I DUN CAAAARE >.>;; it's practically my spanner outfit anyway >.>;;; i'll rewear it? err... (where the hell do i get a matching hat orz. guess i have to finally learn how to make hats.... )

Anyone feel like being my Teru? >.>;;;; not that anyone will recognize us but... it'll be fun? ;____; damn, i'd actually ask [info]hakuku to be my Teru... if she wasn't living on the OTHER side of this continent OTL... I don't know many others who likes this series and is willing to cosplay from it.

ANYWAYS! I highly recommend it. I even bought the Japanese manga books 1- 5 this weekend at Kinokuniya coz I was THAT obessessed and I needed to re-read it when i'm not on the computer. By now i practically memorized their lines >.> And I started to pick up a few japanese words again now that I'm forced to read Japanese.

.... >.>; yes I am in need of help.

What makes it even MORE worse is that... THERE IS NO MERCHANDISE for this series! NONE!! i mean, it's normal for shoujo manga i guess but!!! ;____; daaamn, nothing in yahoo japan! I thought it was a fluke! I checked it with several different ways to spell it and stumbled upon some small 'official book' or something. but I can't even find anyone selling the used manga? what gives?! D: am i doing something wrong here?

Anyways, enjoy the amv~~~ it's my favorite. I've been listening to it over and over and over.... I want that music box ;____; I've been looking all over the place to FIND the musical part so i can MAKE my own time after time music box that's in the manga. >.>;;; I HOPE THIS BECOMES AN ANIME JUST SO I CAN BUY STUFF!!!! And if it becomes an anime, i'm pretty sure it'll make that music box. I WANT IT SO BADLY!!!!!!!!!!!

lately, i'm extremely into shoujo >.>;;;

/////////////////////////////////////////////

i also just lost my paid account and now reduced to weird amounts of icons. trying to figure out what to do... do i renew it or... just live with this small amount. it's not that big of a deal after all... i just need to sort out which i use the most i guess >.>

Ok so hi everyone, I am a huge fan of Solid & etc...so I heard there was an R-18 section. I have been looking for over an hour...I just want some pictures of them! They are so pretty, she asks not to spread it around so if you know just message me. Thanks so much. I am so curious.

Hi everyone!

I just finished a commission for Genesis Rhapsodos's rapier from FFVII Crisis Core and thought you guys might be interested in seeing it! The finished sword was 5'7" (to match the cosplayer's height) and weighed about 5 pounds. It's a little crazy to imagine this sword is actually a rapier considering how long it is and its weight, but...there you go XD

Genesis collage

You can click on the above photo to go to my DA page with more info on how I made it. The basic sword is made of wood, with the hilt detailing sculpted out of Aves Apoxie Sculpt (a 2-part clay-like kneaded epoxy) over a wire form.

A closer up of the hilt )

I hope you find it interesting! m_m
